Mike Denklau, Democratic Candidate for Congress in Iowa’s 5th District, Responds to Matt Campbell’s Campaign Announcement

The Denklau for Congress campaign today issued a response to Matt Campbell’s campaign announcement in a press release.

Council Bluffs, IA – January 27, 2010 – Mike Denklau, Democratic candidate for Congress in Iowa’s 5th District, offered the following statement regarding Matt Campbell’s announcement today that he will compete for the nomination to seek the Congressional seat currently held by Representative Steve King in the 5th District of Iowa.

As events in Massachusetts proved last week, voters are justifiably outraged by the continuing economic crisis left to us by eight years of Bush and King economic policies that increased the federal debt 67% from 2003 to 2008, resulted in a 10% national unemployment rate, and left over 110,000 Iowans out of work. Massachusetts also demonstrated that early and sustained voter outreach efforts are essential to building a strong campaign in the current environment. Mike responded to the late arrival of another contender for the Democratic nomination by saying: “I am a proud, fiscally conservative, progressive Democrat. I look forward to a spirited debate of the issues facing all 5th District Iowans in the weeks and months ahead as voters consider who the strongest candidate is to compete against and defeat Steve King in November and deliver the best new leadership for the 5th District in Congress.”

Last year, Mike launched his campaign to serve all people of the 5th District – Democrats, Independents, and Republicans – and offer an alternative to the ineffective representation provided by Steve King over the past seven years. As a former banker and teacher, Mike firmly believes he is best positioned to make a difference for 5th District Iowans on job creation, expanding educational opportunities, and the important debate on how to strengthen and improve our financial system. Mike is confident that his growing base of supporters throughout the 5th District will recognize that the challenge before us to elect fresh leadership in Congress is a marathon, not a sprint. Mike’s early start in this marathon and his broad based outreach to the 5th District – already covered through multiple press reports available on Mike’s official campaign web site, http://www.denklauforcongress.com – places him in the best position to win this race in November.

Mike noted that he has managed a small business and has several years of experience in the financial sector. “I have raised capital for companies to fund and grow their businesses, advised business owners on strategic growth plans, and helped companies implement stimulus funds. I also have first-hand experience working with policy-makers in Washington. Additionally, as a college instructor, I know what it will take to improve our education system and expand the pool of talent we need to attract new businesses to the 5th District.”

Mike Denklau looks forward to winning the Democratic Party nomination in June, and offering 5th District Iowans stronger representation of their interests in Congress following his defeat of Steve King on November 2nd.
